Robert E. “The Goat” Smathers, age 76, of New Plymouth, Ohio, passed away September 12, 2021 at his residence.
Robert was born February 21, 1945 in Buchtel, Ohio to Curtis Smathers and Anna Harris Smathers. He was a 1963 graduate of Buchtel-York High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in Vietnam. Robert had retired from Goodyear and then worked at Walmart after retirement. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Jeri Smathers of New Plymouth; children, Bryan Smathers of Nelsonville, Danielle Smathers of Nelsonville, Brian Warthman of Logan, Tammy (Matthew) Horton of New Plymouth, and Heath (Cindy) Smathers of Haydenville; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Beverly Cruit of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; son Chad Smathers; and sister Arlene Lauderback.
Calling hours were observed on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan, Ohio.
Burial will be at a later date in Carbon Hill Cemetery, with a military service by the Hocking County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
