Charles Townsend

Charles Edward Townsend, 93, Passed away peacefully Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. He was born in Nelsonville, Ohio to the late Elza A. Townsend and Edith L. Pettit Barlett on October 24, 1921. Charles E. Townsend was married to the late Opal L (Altman) Townsend for 72 years and resided in the Buchtel, Nelsonville area. In 1942 Charles entered the United States Army, serving three years and four months during World War II as a truck driver in the 82nd Air Engineering Squadron 6th Air Service Group. In 1956 he created and operated Ace Tire Shop in Nelsonville, Ohio and in 1984 relocated the business to Buchtel, Ohio. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Athens Chapter 39. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather as well as a passionate business owner. Charles is preceded in death by his parents; and his late wife, Opal L. Townsend. Charles is survived by his son, Ronnie C. (Nancy) Townsend of Nelsonville; and a granddaughter, Amy A (Gary) Simons of Jacksonville, Ohio. The family would like to send a special thank you to Jim and Diane McDonald, Jerry Kline, Dave Kline, and Ed Edmonson, all of Nelsonville for their many years of support and attentiveness for Charles while at home. The family would also like to thank the staff at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice for their gentle love and thoughtfulness during his final days. The funeral service was held Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Warren-Brown Funeral Home Nelsonville, Ohio with Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery Nelsonville, Ohio, where Military Graveside services were conducted by the Combined Color Guard. Calling hours were held Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service was held at 7:00 pm. The family requests donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL 33607.
