A loving father, son, brother, and a friend to many… on December 22, 2023, Ray Alvin Mathias, passed away at his home in Athens, Ohio.
Ray was a lifelong resident of Athens County. He was a graduate of Athens High School. He was born on July 13, 1961, to his mother, Pauline Mathias and his late father, Fred Mathias Sr.
Ray’s departure from this life will mean a reunion with his late wife, Kimberly Mathias, who passed away on December 20, 2001. Ray’s love for Kimberly was never doubted, even in the years of living without her. One thing about Ray was the unconditional love he had for Kimberly and for his two kids.
Ray leaves behind a family that will never let his memory fade and will never forget the times they had with him. Ray is survived by his son, Kolt Mathias; daughter, Kayla Mathias Smathers; four grandsons that meant the world to him, Hunter and Kash Mathias, and Seth and Slaiden Smathers; mother, Pauline Mathias; sister, Brenda Hamilton; brother, Fred Mathias Jr; many other family members as cousins (Mike Martin amongst others), nieces, and other family members he cared deeply for; and also close lifelong bonds with so many other Athens natives, to name a few, Kenny Gilbraith, Jeff Crabtree and Mike Chaney.

There are no services currently. A Celebration of Life will be announced by his family at a later date.
