Virginia “Ginny” Hawkins

1931 to 2023

Virginia “Ginny” Hawkins, beloved aunt, sister, daughter and wife, went to be with the Lord on February 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hawkins; parents, Zuretta and William Fick; brother, Robert Fick; and sister, Anita Wolfe.

Ginny was driven to succeed in anything she did. She graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1949, specializing in shorthand, typing and general business courses.  She was the featured baton twirler and first female drum major for Nelsonville High School marching band. Ginny was an accomplished swimmer, master of the Swan Dive, roller skater, and tennis player. She loved to play tennis and loved helping others learn the sport, as well.

In the early 1950’s, Ginny met her husband, Howard Hawkins, at The Majestic Theatre in Nelsonville where Ginny worked in concessions. They began dating and were married in 1953. They were devoted to each other for 54 years until his passing in 2007.

Ginny was a benevolent animal rights activist and generous philanthropist throughout her life. She believed all animals are creatures of God and are entitled to our love and protection.

Ginny was a very successful businesswoman and a believer in continuous education. She completed several courses over the years at Hocking College. She held positions at Ohio University, Ohio Bell Telephone, and the Tuberculosis hospital in Nelsonville.

Ginny is survived by her sister, Myrtle Wharton, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, Ohio with Rev. Karen Walters officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio.
