Mary A. Davis

Mary A. Davis, of Nelsonville, Ohio, passed away March 13, 2016. Mary was born in Athens, Ohio, to William Henry and Cornelia Stovall Allen. She was a graduate of Athens High School and Ohio University with Bachelor of Science in Commerce; upon graduation from college worked for Kodak in the accounting department in Oak Ridge, TN, on what became later known as the Manhattan Project. During this time she played women’s basketball and won the status of East Tennessee All-Star; Certified Medical Assistant and secretary/office manager for her brother William H. Allen, Jr., M.D. for 44 years; Charter member of the Pandorian Club of Nelsonville; received the Nelsonville and Southeast Ohio Regional Council Person of the Year Award; Nelsonville VFW/Rolland Pierce Citizenship Award; and Co-Compiled and published “Nelsonville in Pictures.” Indexed Athens Messenger obituaries for Athens County Historical & Geneology Societies with sister Mildred; member of the Colonial Dames of America 17th Century; Kentucky Colonel; Past National President of the Stovall Family Association; Past President of Nelsonville Rotary; Past President of Hyperion Club of Nelsonville; Past Director of the Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce; Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Director of Junior Clubs 1956-1958; Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs President 1978-1980; elected into Athens High School Athletic Hall of Fame; organized many reunions of the Athens High School class of 1940; member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Past Editor of The Buckeye Magazine; Past Mailing List Chairman of The Buckeye Magazine; served on the Parade of the Hills and the Queens committee of the Parade of the Hills several times; served many years at the state and national level of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs; and the GFWC Jennie June Award winner, the highest individual recognition given to a woman’s club member. Surviving are her son Bill Davis (significant other Judi Whitmore) of Nelsonville; daughter Barbara (Joel) Whitaker of Belpre; grandson William T.(Shannon) Davis II; granddaughter Jill Elizabeth (Tony) Wells; great-grandson William T. Davis III; brother Tom (Myrna) Allen of Holland, Michigan; several nieces and nephews; and special great-granddaughter Ella Kline. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband O.W. Davis; sisters, Mildred and Betty; and brother William H. Allen Jr., M.D. Funeral services were held 1:00 pm Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Warren-Brown Funeral Home Nelsonville, Ohio. Burial was in West Union Street Cemetery, Athens, Ohio. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the GFWC Ohio Endowment Fund,c/o Carolyn Adams, Treasurer, 414 E. Columbia Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 43953. Calling hours were observed Friday, March 18, 2016 from 11:00 am to time of service.
